Over time, the majority of Chevrolet products manage to get the Super Sport treatment. Slapping an SS badge on a Chevy usually always means higher horsepower and torque, tighter suspension and a bodacious body. The latest bowtie, the 2012 Sonic, with its turbocharged 1.4 liter inline four cylinder, light weight and tidy suspension would be an obvious candidate for some performance injections. According John Buttermore, lead development engineer for the Sonic, that reasoning simply isn’t enough to justify an SS model.“It would take a lot more air going through that engine for an SS, and there is no SS in the works,” said Buttermore in an interview with Wards Auto. Despite the disappointing news, he did mention that 2013 will bring a higher output Sonic with a sportier demeanor. More than likely, a 1.4 liter with slightly raised boost pressure will be found under the hood. Matched to it can be a new six speed automatic, which will find its way onto all Sonics earlier than expected. Originally slated for the 2013 model year, the auto will now hit the market for 2012.
